Sleep is a vital necessity every human being needs.

Although there are differences between individuals as far as how much sleep is needed, there is no denying that sleep is necessary for life.

When we sleep, our body gets the chance to rest and rejuvenate. Our heart rate and breathing slow down while our muscles and tissues get repaired.

Our brain takes the opportunity to process the things we learned throughout the day.

Lack of sleep negatively affects mood which manifests with irritability, grogginess, poor decisions. It also affects physical and cognitive activity and can lead to hallucinations, lethargy and fatigue.

Are there any problems with not getting enough sleep?

People who don't sleep enough usually have a hard time focusing throughout the day and may even fall asleep in the middle of an activity.

Sleep deprivation can lead to depression, weight gain and can eventually effect the immune system, leading to disease and death.

Some people have difficulty sleeping when they are sick, or because they have a sleep disorder such as insomnia. Some people find it hard to sleep when they are depressed.

Great ideas for increasing the amount of sleep one gets on a regular basis is by going to sleep earlier. Avoiding coffee within a few hours of bed time is also a great idea. Bedtime routines can do wonders in helping your body feel relaxed.

Many people will drink some warm milk, take a walk, shower, do yoga or other light physical activity, or even read a book to help them de-stress before bed. The average person should aim to sleep for 8-10 hours per night to wake feeling refreshed.

Some people even play white noise, such as the sound of a vacuum cleaner, or relaxing music to help them sleep. In extreme cases, some people take a sleep aid such as a pill.
