Blockbuster.comIf you’re still schlepping movies to and from the video store, it’s time to ask yourself why, when there’s that glorious thing out there that has long since eliminated the need for such effort…perhaps you’ve heard of it, it’s called The Internet. And thanks to it and those fine folks that love to do the schlepping for you, namely USPS, you can join a movie membership program...let’s focus on one from a place you are probably already a card-carrying member of, blockbuster.com. Of course you’ve realized the obvious advantage, that once you sign up for blockbuster.com’s movie rental program, the store has essentially relocated itself to your mailbox. Picking up and returning a movie means stepping a few feet outside of your door. You wouldn’t have even found a parking spot outside of your video brick and mortar in that time. But there’s also selection. Blockbuster.com has about 85,000 titles and the collection is expanding rapidly; your local branch has about 15,000 titles and given the physical limitations of the store, they won’t be able to expand by much unless they do without the Twizzlers. (And hey, maybe we need to count the lack of snack food availability as another plus to movie mailbox rentals.) How many of those 15,000 titles have you already seen? How many have you sworn you’d never watch if you were trapped on a desert isle with a dvd player, a mysterious power source, and those movies? If you’re a buff, you probably feel a little painted into a corner with your current selection. And something you may not have considered as a blockbuster.com advantage is the ability to queue movies you’d like to watch. That may not seem like a big deal, but unless you’re one of those people that limits yourself to exclusive intake of new releases with guaranteed availability, you’ve frequently found yourself standing in the video store, staring at racks of videos, asking yourself “Now what was it I’ve been meaning to watch? What’s the one that stars Whatshisname? What was that one that Jack told me about that sounded good but I forgot to write down the title and carry it with me to the movie store?” Blockbuster.com solves that because whenever you think of a movie, you can jump into your queue and add it…no more spending your free time wandering around the video store. You watch a movie, you put your movie in an envelope, pull the little tab off the sticky bit and fold down the flap, and trot it out to your mailbox, and the next movie in your queue comes wandering to your door all by itself. Welcome to life in the 21st century. You’re probably even going to spend less money for this convenience. Plans run about $10-$20 per month, ranging from 1 DVD at a time (limit 2 per month) to 3 out at a time (unlimited). If you’re a real fan and you’re close to a distribution center, this can equate to a lot of movies. It takes a few days to receive the replacement movie…let’s figure 4 to be liberal, 1 day to watch and 3 to receive the next. With 3 out at a time, you’ll have watched about 22 movies in a month. For twenty bucks. And actually, that plan comes with 5 store exchanges if you just REALLY love that store thing. Now I’m not going to lie to you…there’s going to be a transitional period, a time of adjustment. You’re used to driving to the video store and doing things the hard way. So if you want to, you can still do that. Just bring me some Twizzlers on the way back because I do so miss them. Blockbuster Online.
