Visit the Grand Canyon
For many people, the Grand Canyon symbolizes the greatest travel destination in America. Almost five million people visit the Grand Canyon every year. The immensity of the Grand Canyon is awe-inspiring; it is one mile deep and up to 18 miles across with 277 miles of river. Although the rocks on the bottom of the Canyon are around 2000 million years old, the Canyon itself is only six million years old and is considered very young in geological terms. For people who wish to visit the Grand Canyon there are several choices in how to see it and what to do. The most popular way to see the Canyon is from car overlooks that are spaced along the South Rim (open all year) as well as from Grand Canyon Village. The Canyon can also be seen from the North Rim which is one thousand feet higher and, as a result, closes from late October to the middle of May due to heavy snows. For as better look at the Canyon though, hiking, camping, mule rides and a stay at Phantom Ranch are great choices. Many people who visit the Grand Canyon choose to hike because it is a wonderful way to experience it. Hikes can be started at either rims but the South Rim is easier. There are several choices when it comes to the duration of the hike one wishes to undertake. It is possible to hike to the 1.5 Mile Resthouse, turn around and head back up to the rim. The next one would be the 3.0 Mile Resthouse. Both of these ending points have a place to refill water bottles and an emergency phone but no campground. It is important to keep in mind that 3 miles down equals 3 miles up which makes it a 6 mile day. It is also important to take water on all hikes. While some of the resting places have access to water, others do not, and sometimes the water is turned off due to the season. People who go further than these Resthouses usually camp in the Canyon. Indian Garden (4.6 miles from the rim) has a campground as does Bright Angel Campground which is 9.3 miles from the rim. For those who prefer a lodge, Phantom Ranch is 9.8 miles from the rim. Whichever way people choose to visit the Grand Canyon, the experiences make memories that last a life time. Rent a car with Dollar Rent a Car for your trip to the Grand Canyon.
