Backpackers Need Travel Insurance Too

Like every other segment, insurance industry has also poked his nose in tourism and that is understandable as well.

Although I travel quite often and usually I leave my place at least once every year. Despite of being persuaded many times, I was never of the view that backpackers need travel insurance too until the day when some incidents taught me that I was mistaken.

It was in last July when I packed my bags for a jungle safari trip to Nairobi. Like always I was alone and free like a bird on this tour. All was going well until I reach the Nairobi International Airport. The first shock I received was that I came out of the terminal building with only my hand carry as for some odd reasons, while changing flights my luggage was miss handled and not loaded with me.

Even though the concerned officials promised to resolved the issue but they need some days time and as a traveler I lacked this luxury. Obviously the bags had got some essential belongings and that was the first time when somebody murmured in my ears that backpackers need travel insurance too.

As I was there for just few days, so without wasting any time after checking in the hotel, famous for its economical rates and good downtown location, I came out to explore the place. I didn’t forget to bring my trusted digital camcorder with me.

The city was refreshing and as it is called the green city in the sun, the pleasure had wiped all my tensions which I got at the arrival. It was quite late when I decided to go back to the hotel. I asked the cab to drop me two blocks before my destination, as I want to explore a bit more.

Suddenly some street boys appeared from dark corners, they were loaded and within minutes they not only looted me but I was decently beaten as well. All of that was happened so quickly that I didn’t retaliate. I lost my expensive camcorder, my wallet having all my credit and ATM cards, my identity details and of course some cash as well. More importantly I had some serious bruises which need immediate attention.

The things which happened later were part of a long story but my dearest camera, my wallet and not to forget the medical bills keep reminding me that the backpackers need travel insurance too.

I used to be a person who always thought that these kinds of things will never happen to me as I remained extremely cautious but I was wrong. It was too late to realize that but anyhow the lesson has been learned. Now I firmly believe and suggests others as well that backpackers need travel insurance too.
